I am not sure but that Hogwarts "runs itself" to some extent--over 
the years amassing the spelles and magical necessities to take care 
of what needs to be taken of--LOL.  However, my concern with Filch is 
that he is convinced he doesn't have powers--maybe he does--there 
have been latent wizards before--or late developing wizards.  Even 
more than his regrets at being a "squib" and jealousy of those who do 
give evidence of magical prowess, is the feeling I get about Filch 
having a very unhappy emotional life.  I wonder (often) if Mrs. 
Norris is more than a cat or kneazle--maybe she was a love interest 
who had to transfigure herself into a cat for protection against 
Deatheaters and stayed too long in that form.  Now, she can't return 
to human form--and Filch has taken over her care and is hoping 
Dumbledore and/or McGonagall can figure out a way to restore her.  I 
just remember how upset Filch was when he thought Mrs. Norris had 
been killed in COS!  Seemed a bit excessive, although I have had many 
cats and always cry when one dies.  Opal Dragonfly
