I think the point of him owning or working for a drill company is to 
show his association with modern technology, and its symbols of 
power.  Uncle Vernon is an industrialist business man.  His son 
Dudley is a technophile.  This is in contradistinction to the 
Wizarding World, which does not know of modern technology.
