I have the same speculation on my mind too. 
I think it is a possibility that Snape was personally trained by 
Dumbledore in Occlumency (to be a spy perhaps?). And in doing so 
Dumbledore has completely see-through Snape as a person, where he saw 
the loyalty lies deep underneath all the flaws this man might have. 
Hence DD trust Snape to his heart.
