I was reading the prophecy through again, and, considering JKR's
habit of intentional ambiguity and misleading writing, a thouroughly
ridiculus possibility occurred to me: what if the prophecy were not
about Voldemort at all? Granted, she would have to pack a hell of a
lot of story into the next two books (new plot, backstory, not to
mention motives), but, she is quite fond of unexpected twists. IN
the prophecy, Voldemort is never actually referred to by his name; he
is only referred to as the 'Dark Lord.' Certainly, he is often
called the Dark Lord, but who's to say there's only one? We know
from book 1 that Dumbldore defeated an apparently famous dark wizard
in 1945 (i was reminded of this by another recent post,
unfortunately, i can't remember whose it was), so obviously, there
was evil prior to Voldemort. For all we know, Dumbledore could be
the real Dark Lord, and he only wants Harry to help him knock
Voldemort out of the way so that he can take over. Maybe Fudge was
right to fear Dumbldore's Army.
Odds are, of course, that I'm just completely off my rocker, but,
then again, why couldn't Dumbledore be the bad guy? She's already
killed Sirius, so nothing's really going to phase me at this point.

-Jon (who's still a bit bitter that no one thought to find out what
Sirius' gift had been prior to the mad dash into Umbridge's fireplace)
