I am not stretching too far I don't think, but in reference to Draco, a lot
of abused children get 'pay offs' from the abuser. Lucius seems to fit a
profile in my mind of an abusive parent so Draco's presents from him might be just
to satisfy some guilt in his abusiveness. Also, I think that purchasing the
brooms for the Slytherin team was more to support his own house rather than his
son. Lucius doesn't seem to care about anyone.
In GoF, we see the way he enters the World Cup Pitch with his wife, so aptly
named (btw), and his son. Lucius almost doesn't even know they exist, rather
his is driven to show off in front of others and humiliate the Weasleys. This
are al abusive tendencies.
Just some thoughts,

To use darrin burnett's analogy, Draco has indeed turned into Wil E.
Coyote, which leaves Harry with nothing to say but "beep-beep". I say
our Harry is a classic hero on the scale of Bugs Bunny; he needs
Draco to rise to the level of Daffy Duck for the Final Confrontation
to have any poignancy at all.
--JDR, visualizing the final scene like this: having lost the
epic "rabbit season, duck season" battle, a broken and bleeding Draco
screeches "go on, shoot me again! I love the smell of cordite and
burnt feathers!"
