I have to agree more with the fact that harry was probably too young
to conciously remember his mother's death. James probably dies outside
of Harry's view, most likely dueling with Voldie somewhere just
ouside the house (if not earlier in the day, even).
I *do* think that Harry saw his mother die, but at his infantile age,
it didn't leave a memory. I think the thestral thingie is not only
SEEN death, but also have an understanding of death, because it's
played out right before your eyes. Neville probably was present when
his grandfather (I think that's who he saw) passed away. Like many
people in the last few decades are participating in the deaths of
loved ones, being there at the last hours and such.
Harry certainly is extremely concious of Cedric..as it appears to me
to be giving Harry an emotional problem, as well as the ability to see
and hear things associated with death in the wizarding world
