Why do we love Snape so much? Everyone is anti-James because we see
an *edited* snippet of the way he treated Snape, but we see none of
how Snape treated him, none of the "pre-pensieve event" life.
Diana:
Because he's one of the few gray characters in a black-and-white world.
He's not totally good, he's not totally bad - he's a mix of both. He's
complex and complicated. We're not sure of his motives, not entirely sure
which side he's on, and even if he's solidly on the Good Guys side, he's not
a nice person. After all, why do many people like Han Solo better than Luke
Skywalker? Because he's a scoundrel! Why was James Dean's characters
always so popular? Because they were Rebels and Bad Boys! Why are we
secretly rooting for Dracula in many of the movies? Because he's much more
fascinating than the Good Guys!
As for "edited" snippet - well, you'll have to convince me that the memory
was edited because - based on what we've seen with Dumbledore's pensieve,
plus the fact that Snape's memory showed things he didn't know (like Lupin
being a werewolf), plus the fact that Lupin and Sirius didn't refute what
happened - I have to say that we're looking at an objective view of what
really happened, just as if a videocamera had recorded it.
