Now LL again:

Actually, (although it's been awhile since I've read PS/SS) I don't
believe we ever saw whether Quirrell was competent or not in the
classroom, but he certainly seemed too timid to defend anything
against the Dark Arts (himself included)...and then there's
Umbridge!

I agree Lupin was an excellent teacher, as was fake!Moody, however,
neither was able to stay.

I just don't see a truly strong argument for keeping Snape away from
teaching DADA - IF Dumbledore really trusts him, and that is canon.
And, speaking of Dumbledore, I can't believe that he didn't see
through Lockhart immediately....after all, he was right on target
about Sybill Trelawney, wasn't he? And Lockhart was an even bigger
phony!

And to all those who say that Snape is too intimidating to teach such
an *important* subject, it's not like the conditions are going to be
calm when the students are going to need their DADA skills...they're
likely to be under plenty of stress....just like in Snape's
classroom....

ps: Retention is retention - doesn't really matter if the
termination was voluntary or not; the fact remains Dumbledore can't
keep a DADA teacher more than 1 year.
