My personal theory is that Snapes turn from the DE to Dumbledore had 
something to do with V going after the Potters, not the Longbottoms 
for the following reasons:
* We don't see Snape undergoing trial after the downfall of V and 
besides surely that was too late for him to do something to make DD 
trust him? All the other DE's (Malfoy and Co) describe their 
alligience to V as being under Imperious curses and the like, so I 
doubt Snape saying that would have any impact on DD. 
* In POA after he arrives at the Shrieking Shack, Snape says to 
Harry "Like father like son, Potter! .....You'd have died like your 
father, too arrogant to believe that you might be mistaken in Black", 
so he must have had somethng to do with warning DD / the Potters 
about V's plan, but not known who V's spy in the Order was, and, for 
some reason thought it was Sirius.
