I don't know that LV knew he could read it from DD's mind.  I think 
DD is too advanced in occlumency to be that easily read.  I think the 
not looking Harry in the eye comes from DD not wanting to know that 
Harry and DD are so close.  DD knows Harry is the only one who can 
destroy LV.  LV doesn't know this.  But Harry is still young, and 
therefore LV would have thought him controllable.  Remember LV is not 
afraid of Harry.  I believe that DD thought that if LV got it into 
his head that DD and Harry were close, LV would then attack Harry.  
And Harry at this stage may or may not be able to fight it.  (Well, 
by now we know he can, but DD was doing the protect Harry thing).

This is a very good idea.  However, remember that LV underestimates 
the blood relative and mother's love types of magic.  He won't think 
it necessary.
