I think in part it had something to do with the twins being gone.  
Having Fred and George for older siblings would be quite a 
challenge.  I'm sure they teased Ron all his life, and even though 
it was probably nothing more than normal sibling stuff, after 15 
years of it it can start to wear down one's confidence.

Was anyone else upset that we didn't actually SEE Ron's final game?  
I feel that JKR could have introduced Hagrid's brother at another 
time.  After 5 books of Ron always being overshadowed by someone 
else, I would have really loved to see Ron's win.
