I was listening to the book on audiotape last evening and I think
that if you re-read that passage in the book, you will find that
Hermione makes several attempts during the incident with Umbridge and
the centaurs to try to stop Umbridge from continuing to
inflame/insult the "half-breeds" (unsuccessful, of course!) If she
really wanted the centaurs to *kill* Umbridge as opposed to
*distract* her, it seems as though she would have been silent or
subtly egging her on.
That said, Hermione's plan was flawed. It is hard to image a
scenerio in which Umbridge is distracted enough by the centaurs
(short of being carried off as she was) and Harry and Hermione would
be able to slip away from her *and* the centaurs.
I agree with the point made by others that Grawp's appearance in the
nick of time to allow H and H to escape was *way* too convenient!
However, IMO it was eclipsed by the *stunningly* convenient
appearance of Ron/Ginny/Neville/Luna, seconds later, miles into the
forest and off the path (based on the description of H/H and U's
journey) having escaped from 5 captors with wands! I know that they
are members of the DA, but that was still hard to believe! Elle
