I respectfully disagree with those who feel that Hermione was
attempting murder. I also disagree with those who say her plan is
flawed, she should have known better, etc.
To me, Hermione was in the face of a very bad situation. Umbridge
was at this point, maniacal. I don't know that anyone can deny
this. She has heard proof of the weapon that she and Fudge "know" DD
has been creating. She has found the proof that she needs to take to
Fudge to further insure her position. She can now further use that
info and position to continue to manipulate Fudge, continue to keep
DD a non-risk, and assure that she maintains the power that she is so
very desperate to have. She must know that the chaos at the school
is going to leak to parents, who are probably going to notify Fudge
(if they aren't already.) Yes- she is intercepting all mail and make
sure this doesn't happen- but it is the end of the year. Students
will go home, and how will she control their mouths then? Her
position is in danger. And that is not good. But, she has heard
Snape and Harry referring to Padfoot, and she's been told that
Padfoot is the weapon that Fudge has been seeking. And she, Doloros
Umbridge will be the one to hand it to him, and this will make her
number one in Fudge's book, regardless of what the parents might
start to say.
Hermione has already seen that Umbridge is so out of control she
isn't even trying to reign in the Inquisition Squad- it took Snape
entering the office to get Goyle (Krabbe?) to release Neville enough
so he could breathe. And she has seen Umbridge begin to utter the
Cruciatus in order to get that iformation. The woman is obviously
out of control, and dangerous. Hermione was wandless, had her arms
pinned back, and was powerless. She thought of the only thing she
could- lead Umbridge away and get her out of that room. I think that
when she told the centaurs she thought they would help her, that she
meant exactly that. She knows centaurs will protect the foals-
(children) and was hoping they would help her by getting Umbridge
away from them- but not through Umbridge's death. And has been
pointed out before- when DU started piping off her racist remarks,
Hermione tried desperately to stop her. But DU is so involved with
her hatred (for the centaurs, Hermione, loss of control, name it)
that she ignored the child. (In Umbridge's mind- the insignificant
child).
As a result, the centaurs went after Umbridge. It's an example of
Karma. Umbridge, full of hate, anger, greed, considered by many to
be negative emotions, was forced to pay.
Hermione just wanted someone to help them. I imagine that Hermione
believed Snape would do something to help Sirius' situation when he
got out of that office (which he did), but also that Snape would not
do anything to help the situation within the office- (which he did
not). And for those who will be defending Snape against this last
accusation- I know Snape didn't realize that when he left the office
things went from bad to worse- just pointing out that for whatever
reason- Snape didn't help the ones in the office.
