Here I am! OK, let's use the example of my "no good Slyth in canon =
no good Slyth!" (post-Riddle, that is)

If, for some reason, JKR let is slip that in one of the books, we'd
get a Slyth who was worth something, then I would have to modify my
position, unless she then doesn't come through.

Example: I could have sworn I read somewhere that JKR said the Flying
Anglia was going to be in OoP. It wasn't, so you have to discount the
interview (if it actually happened and I'm not just imagining things.)

So, I think JKR's thoughts on the characters are valid for examining
them.

seem to bother Hermione as much as we seem to think it should. Alot
of people has said things to the effect of Hermione let this
incident go because she trusts Snape because Dumbledore does. I was
offering another explanation of Hermione's reaction based on her
attitudes about learning and comparing it to my own attitudes as a
student. Nothing more, nothing less. I am pleased that it has
generated a good discussion on both sides, though.

Just to be clear, I think a rational, matter-of-fact Hermione does
not cancel out her desire for revenge, which D-Dore would calm by
letting her in on Snape.

Again, this is the girl who went after Rita Skeeter with chilling
precision and who calculated the Polyjuice Plan, which, you could
argue really kicked into gear after Malfoy called her a mudblood.

She doesn't have to have been hysterical to want Snape's greasy butt
nailed to the barn door.

It is also possible that Hermione knows about Snape not through any
of this, but through good old fashioned research. For all we know,
there is a reference to a Theseus, Medusa and Perseus Evans in
Hogwarts: A History that tells everything.

Since she's the only one who reads it, only she would know.

-- Always happy to keep a Snape discussion going.
