But we saw how little time it takes for these spells to wear off 
during the fight with the Death Eaters at the end of OoP. Do you 
really think that if they did Stupefy or Petrify him that by the time 
it'd worn off, Sirius would have changed his mind about going after 
Harry? Maybe the plan was take him with us and keep him safe instead 
of having him out there on his own.

New question though:
Why, when Harry used the floo powder in Umbridge's office the first 
time didn't Sirius remind Harry that he had given him the mirrors to 
use when he wanted to contact him? THAT could have saved his life!
