>The lab idea is good. I spend a lot of time in the
chemistry labs at school and my hair gets limp and has
a shine (so does my skin until I wash it). It's quite
possible, but wasn't there an instance where we see
Snape as first period/class of the day? That would be
9am (I think) and that is a bit early to already have
been in the lab for a few hours.

My husband (a chemistry teacher) doesn't have that problem with his hair,
but he doesn't live right next to the labs, either. He also has a friend
(another teacher) who doesn't sweep with sulfur to get out all the
accumulated mercury and over the years, has acquired the Mad Hatter shakes
from long-term mercury poisoning. (and given the stuff that goes on in
Potions, Snape's liver probably looks like Swiss cheese. Never mind the
metallic vapors inhaled over the years from melting cauldrons. Spells do
clear things out, but stuff does accumulate despite that, especially if
there doesn't seem to be a formal ventilation system. And I can't believe
nobody wear GOGGLES!). Actually, I wonder if all Potions Masters have a rep
for being bad-tempered (_see_ a scary novel called _The Gold Crew_). Being
sent out on spy missions is probably the only fresh air he gets.
