Despite what JKR said in that interview, and the fact that Hagrid
was cleared in COS, what Hagrid himself says seems to
contradict this. In "Hagrid's Tale", p 425 (American edition), of
OoP, Hagrid recounts the journey to find the giants. He says,
"We had to go slow, 'cause I'm not really s'posed ter use magic
an' we knew the Ministry'd be lookin' fer a reason ter run us in."
I think Hagrid could be the person JKR referred to as using
magic "late in life"; and that the occasion in which he will do so,
will be to save Dumbledore's life. This could have been
foreshadowed in SS when Dumbledore said: "I would trust
Hagrid with my life."
