Disregarding the anagrams (which may turn out to be a clue, I don't know), my first thought about the gum wrappers was that they were somehow a symbol of love.  Love of mother for son (for giving them) or son for mother (for keeping them), I'm really not sure.  However, as we know, love is very powerful in the world of Harry Potter.  I think that importance lies in that the love will protect Neville at some point, somehow.
