"amanitamuscaria1" :
Why should Harry's scar make him Voldemort's chosen one? I can't see
how the fact that Voldemort's curse failed means that V has chosen
Harry as his Nemesis?
"acoteucla" :
LV's incomplete knowledge of the prophecy told him that either Harry
or Neville would have the power to bring about his downfall. For
whatever reason, he decided that Harry was the one to fear, and
Neville was just some bimbo. So at this point, LV has already
chosen. He thinks that Harry has the power to be his equal, not
Neville. The scar is the "mark" which shows that LV chose Harry.
"amanitamuscaria1" :
Not necessarily so - all it means is that he attacked Harry first. He
may have had a list of 100 wizard-born children of the right age,
etc. that he would have gotten around to if Harry hadn't stopped the
spree. The 'choice' in the scar appears to be not on Voldemort's
part, or only in that he chose to attack Harry first - maybe he
didn't even do that, and we simply haven't heard of other magic-born
children who perhaps died in the general slaughter? - but in Lily
protecting Harry, and the connection being made that V. attacks the
Potters, but the boy lives.
Me, Del :
I believe the Prophecy is about Harry, as Harry could take it without
suffering any damage (but see below for a question that could change
that). But in my opinion, it was entirely a matter of bad luck on
Harry's part that he turned out to be the Chosen One. Here's why :
1. DD is the one that says that the choice was either between Harry
or Neville. But I'm getting VERY wary of DD. After all, "as the
seventh month dies", or whatever the prophecy says, doesn't
necessarily mean *exactly* on the 31st of July. It could mean any day
at the end of July. So there might have been more than 2 kids. And
for all we know, it might even not have been July that year. Maybe it
was years later. Maybe the kid isn't even born ? Maybe the Prophecy
hasn't been fulfilled yet at all ?
2. But my biggest point is that LV did NOT choose Harry. He only had
the opportunity to get to Harry first. Both kids were most likely
protected, and it so happened that Harry's protection was the first
one to crumble when Pettigrew turned out to be a traitor. So of
course LV went after him then. But noone knows whether he would not
have gone after Neville first had he had a choice. Once again, we
have only DD's word on that one : HE is the one who says that LV
chose Harry over Neville. But *I* say LV only had a chance to get at
Harry first, period. No choice, just bad luck on Harry's side.

Another instance of JKR not giving us crucial information just to
keep us in the dark. Oh well...
Ah ! One question that could change everything I said : how does the
protection on the prophecies work ? Is it the people it talks about
that are allowed to touch it, or is it the people whose names are on
the title ? In other words, can Harry touch it because the Prophecy
is about him, or can he touch it because his name is on the
description of the prophecy ? Because then maybe it wouldn't be about
him at all and he could still touch it...
