After reading OotP, I still like to think that Florence and Severus 
were the ones necking behind the greenhouse. Though given James' 
habit of hexing anyone he felt like, could he be the one leading the 
poor aspiring Herbology student down the road to the family way ;-)

never the less, I suggest that is Severus Snape and FLorence 
Somethingorother were the two lovebirds that Bertha sniffed out. Once 
school finished, they remained close (Not married mind you, if you 
consdier his childhood scenes that there's a possibility that Snape, 
on his half, would prefer to wait until he was in better financial 
circumstances.) Somewhere, something happened and she was killed 
accidently on prpose by Voldemorts crew to either keep Severus inline 
or keep Severus from walking towards the light.

Assuming that Snape may have been an alright occulumens and legimens 
by this point but still too weak to fool voldemort, he may have been 
able to deduce what really happened from members of the inner circle  
like Malfoy Sr. 

 Just another turn on the long road of Damacleus (SP!!) for Severus 
(who has decided to wear only black, white, and various shades of 
grey in permanent memory of dear friend) which gradually leads him to 
DD office for tea, Lemon drops and the unveiling of DD's brand 
spanking new MAGICAL DISHWASHER. At this time, Order members are 
dropping like flies and Everyone and no one knows what the Dark Lord 
is up to. Snape offers his services as a spy

So what am I getting at?
