Gay!Sirius?

There's been some discussion as to whether the fact that Sirius didn't seem to notice
the girl ogling him in the Pensieve scene is an indication that he was gay. I have to
say, as I haven't seen this point put up before, that my instinctive reading was quite
different.

I just assumed that he didn't notice the girl because he was a good-looking and
popular jock. Also kind of a jerk at the time. You know the type; he *assumes* the
girls are crushing on him. Of course he doesn't bother to *notice* it. He's way too
*cool* for that. And if the girl in question isn't pretty darn attractive, or someone he's
otherwise interested in, he completely ignores her. I just assumed that that "he didn't
seem to notice" was a flag to what we later find out about Sirius in that scene. Just
like we see the first signs of James's arrogance in the classroom, as he rumples his
hair, we see the first signs of Sirius's arrogance. I read "he didn't seem to have
noticed" as a pair with the wonderful "Sirius stared around at the students milling
over the grass, looking rather haughty and bored, but very handsomely so." And the
way he jokes with James about Lily. And "I don't need to look at that rubbish, I know it
all." And the way he treats Snape, and, *especially,* the way he treats Pettigrew. (I
may have to write a post about the way James and Sirius treat Pettigrew, at some
point.) It's a part of his shtick, isn't it? "I don't have time for people like you. I'm too
cool."

<Derannimer reads over her post and realises how it sounds>

No. I really never *did* have a crush on that guy in high school.
