There's been some discussion as to whether the fact that Sirius didn't seem
to notice
the girl ogling him in the Pensieve scene is an indication that he was gay.
I have to
say, as I haven't seen this point put up before, that my instinctive reading
was quite
different.
I just assumed that he didn't notice the girl because he was a good-looking
and
popular jock. Also kind of a jerk at the time. You know the type; he
*assumes* the
girls are crushing on him. Of course he doesn't bother to *notice* it. He's
way too
*cool* for that.
Me -
Seen in isolation that would seem like the most logical interpretation I
agree. However, when you see the scene with James and Sirius bullying Snape
and generally being arrogant smart alecs James seems to be playing to the
crowd in general and Lily in particular. He (mistakenly) seems to think that
this behaviour will make him look cool and get him a girlfriend. Whereas
Sirius seems to be concerned only with the reaction of his three (male)
friends. Now I don't have my book to hand so I can't say *specifically* what
it is that gives me that impression but that was how it seemed to me when I
read it. While I am (as you may have gathered) a fan of the Sirius-Remus
ship that scene actually suggests to me more that Sirius had a thing for
James than anything else.
