Wow, great post!  The first thing that sprang into my mind was what 
Dumbledore said to Harry at the end of OoP about his pain proving he 
was still human, and Harry says if this is the case he doesn't want 
to be human.  It never occured to me a wizard could be anything other 
than human but now.....well the possibilities seem endless.
