Hey - I think you are on to something:  Here is one of the quotes - 
it's from SS/PS, the last chapter, p. 215 in my version (UK) -- 
Harry asks Dumbledore if he got Hermione's owl and he says "We must 
have crossed in mid-air"

I seem to remember another time when Dumbledore called Hedwig "your 
extraordinary owl" -- does anyone know where that is?

Because normally we're given the impression that Hedwig is doing 
things that are ordinary owl behavior -- finding people and 
deliverying mail.   Why is he calling her "extraordinary"?   Or am I 
remembering that wrong?
