down and/or leave him open for another curse if the veil hadn't been there.

Me:
I agree--Bellatrix's curse did not do him in. But I don't think the veil did either. I just suspect that Sirius is floating around in a state Dumbledore would call "worse than death" (that phrase has been cropping up in the series for a while now with greater and greater frequency since Prisoner of Azkaban).
