My take on the "extraordinary owl" comment was that it had more to do
with her colouring. Most of the owls we hear about in the books are
brown barn owls. Hedwig certainly stands out among them, which, in my
understanding of Hagrid (who seems to like the flashier of beasts) is
why she was chosen to be Harry's familiar.
There has to be something going on with Hedwig though, I can't
remember any other owls being described as being as caring of their
owner as Hedwig is described, or even as having as much personality
as she does - looking "reproachfully" at Harry when she is locked in
her cage for the summer, when Harry tells her she'll have to go to
the Weasley's for aunt marge's visit, when Harry won't let her eat
her frog at the beginning of OotP... Pig is very enthusiastic, maybe
owls just have thier own personalities though...
