Hello all,
I'm new and this is kind of long, though I've tried to be methodical, so
please bear with me.
I am wondering if anyone has given any thought to the idea that Lily Evans
is the one that came from the magical family, not James Potter. It seems to
me that we're being misdirected because Petunia is vehemently against the
wizarding world and therefore the assumption is made that her family is not
from it.
I just skimmed through SS to find refutation of my theory but have not
gotten to the rest of the books yet. Now, I have found 3 key mentions of
the Evanses. The first was during Petunia's tirade in the house on the rock
in the sea when Hagrid arrives. She mentions that her parents "were proud
of having a witch in the family!" But there's nothing clearly stating that
they themselves weren't ones as well. The second time is when Hagrid is
talking to Harry about new students from Muggle families doing just as well
as new kids from magical families. He mentions Lily, "Look what she had fer
a sister!" He's clearly talking about Petunia as Lily's sister and not
Petunia as Harry's aunt. Why would Hagrid have met some random student's
Muggle sister?
The third mention is at the Mirror of Erised. Harry "saw other pairs of
green eyes like his." Remember, he looks like his dad with his mother's
eyes. Would non-magical family members, dead or alive, show up in a magical
devise like the mirror?
The idea that the Evanses are the magical family bolsters several other
delicious theories I've encountered. If young Mark Evans is from the
magical side of the family, that would explain why Harry doesn't know of the
shirt-tail relation, because Petunia certainly wouldn't keep in touch with
Those People. There's also the idea of Severus Snape being an anagram for
his real name, Perseus Evans. (See
http://www.mugglenet.com/editorials/gryffindortower/gt10.shtml for an
excellent synopsis of this theory.) It certainly is less far fetched if the
Evans family is the magical one. And it could mean that Snape is "that
awful boy" Petunia overhears talking about Azkaban, since James would have
been a young man by the time he and Lily started dating and he and Petunia
may have met.
Have we ever been told explicitly anything about James' family? There is
yet another great theory about Albus Dumbledore being Harry's
great-grandfather. (See Who are Harry's family at
http://www.hp-lexicon.org/puzzles.html for the redhead connection suggesting
he's Lily's grandfather behind this one.) He could only be the maternal
grandfather of either James or Lily in order for the last name to not have
been passed on. If Lily's mother is a squib who married a wizard, and
there's certainly proof of squibs--Figgy!--living amongst Muggles, that
would help to explain Dumbledore's compassion for the miscellaneous motley
characters he collects at Hogwarts.
Anyway, there it is. We've all been assuming that Lily is the muggle-born
and James is the pureblood wizard based on Petunia not being a witch. But
we also all know that Rowling tosses in red herrings. Let me know what you
think or if you can find any more evidence for or against.
Until later,
Belsum
