Why so few Quidditich Matches?

Why are there so few Quidditch matches? Over the course of a school 
year, each team only plays about 3 matches. Where I come from 
(Kansas), a sports team would have a match at least every weekend, 
and they often have two or three matches a week. I was thinking that 
maybe its just a British thing, but I don't know. Any insight would 
be appreciated.
