Now me:
It occurred to me as I read this thread that we keep coming back to 
assumptions that either Lily and Petunia's parents were muggle/muggle or 
squib/squib, and that's why I liked your suggestion above (which I was about 
to post on too).  Have we come across in the books how someone would be 
categorized with squib/muggle parentage?  Seems that they would be 
contenders for the epithet of "mudblood" too, explaining the Snape-pensieve 
scene where he calls Lily a "mudblood."  And it also makes me think of 
Neville's fear of the basilisk in CoS, saying that everyone knows he's "almost 
a squib" (can't remember complete quote) and that he thinks this puts him in 
danger as well.  Does anyone have any canon that could aid this one?
