I disagree here.  All the staff could be currently single.  (Since 
JKR said that some had had spouse, not that any do right now.)  

It was not that long ago in the states (less that 100 years) that 
married people were not allowed to teach.  (Something about it being 
immoral to think about a teacher doing things that married couples 
do.)  

My aunt was teaching in the 1969, and had to leave her post when she 
was pregnant with my cousin.  As soon as she started showing, she was 
put on maternity leave because "heaven forbid the students would 
think that she had swallowed a watermelon seed."  (Really!)

Additionally, how many students think about the idea of teachers 
having families?  I taught third grade, and first grade for awhile, 
and the students are shocked to see you anywhere but school.  The 
idea of having a spouse, and a house, and kids!!  it blows their 
little minds. Don't you remember how strange it was to run into your 
teacher in the store or to meet their children?

Just my two knuts worth!
