Yeah, bibphile, I agree with your "why Snape hates Harry" theory.
He treats people like dirt because that's how he was treated (and i'm
*not* trying to defend him, old Snivelly is one of my least fav
characters) and if he is nice to anyone, it's just an act.

But i also think that there's something more about Dumbledore
trusting Snape. I just can't imagine he believed him only after
Snape
came to him and said he wants to be a spy or something. It is way
to
important a matter, not to mention that Snivellus is now a member
of
the Order. Dumbledore must be perfectly assured about all this. I
don't think that JKR will let him do any more mistakes in the next
books. The one we see Dumbledore speak about in OoP (if one really
calls this his *mistake*) is the only one he's ever made. I don't
think that the Headmaster is wrong about Snape. I mean - he
doesn't
have to love him, but still he *somehow* knows he can trust him.

When Harry asks Dumbledore about trusting Snape, DD becomes
suddenly
rather, well, solemn, even stern. As if it was something really
only
between them, something only DD and Snivelly know. Maybe it has
something to do with DD's family (if he has/had any). It kinda
popped
into my head, though it sounds a bit impossible. I mean, if he had
any that was killed or is hiding somewhere, people would know
about
it, after all DD was very famous. But still... I don't know.
The "saving somebody's life" theory is most probable but then
whose
life did he save to gain DD's trust? Or by whom was he saved so
that
his debt is so big that he can be trusted?

And I don't believe in all this Snape-in-love-with-Lily stuff. No
way, it's just impossible (IMO). He hated James enough without
being
 in love with his wife.
