My reply:  If JKR was trying to be descrete she wouldn't say that.  I think it's obvious he isnt' a nice person.  His reasons for staying on the good may be solely for selfish gain.  

WE don't know what Dumbledore is giving him in return.  

 

But as much as I hate snape (and i"m sorry to all the snape fans: but the man is an arrogant racist) I doubt he is a death eater.  For the main reason that she woudlnt' say that if he was...she does not come right out and say clear things like that.
