I'm curious. Why should Lupin know this? Even if Voldemort has 
the same theory about what happened as Dumbledore, (and that 
would be odd, because Voldemort doesn't understand this 
ancient love magic thing terribly well) it's still only a theory.

 If Lupin had the Dark Mark, he could well be afraid that touching 
Harry would set off some kind of reaction. Of course now we 
know, thanks to Snape throwing Harry out of his office, that it 
doesn't. 

I can't say I'm fond of the Lupin loved Lily scenario, being more of 
a Snape loved Lily fan myself. The idea would be that Snape 
asked Voldemort for her as a reward for his faithful service. I 
have  even wondered if Lily could have put Snape up to it, fully 
intending to sacrifice her life, but knowing that Voldemort must 
first offer to spare her in order for the magic to work.
