Sirius - who is right?

Given that Sirius sat in that house for a year, I'd say it meant a 
hell of a lot to him.  He left only when Harry's life was in 
immediate danger.  As others have pointed out, the Order members 
were seriously outnumbered by the DEs in that confrontation.  
Staying alive for the sake of your kid becomes kind of meaningless 
if the kid himself is dead.

All of which could've been achieved if somebody had just thought to 
owl Dumbledore a note.
