Granted, they didn't actually experience a fight. But Harry did tell
them about the different spells he had used in his own fights, giving
them some idea of how to use the various skills they were learning.
For example, Zacharias Smith scoffs at the idea of learning
Expelliarmus, until Harry explains that he used it very effectively
against Voldemort. Now, Hermione could probably perform Expelliarmus
as well as Harry, and could probably give everyone a thorough lecture
on the history and uses of this spell, but would she have thought to
use it against Avada Kedavra? Probably not, because the success was
completely unexpected and probably unprecedented. This is where Harry
has the advantage over all his classmates; he knows which spells have
been successful in certain situations, and which ones have not. He
can't recreate dangerous situations for practice, but he can put each
spell the DA learns into context.
