I think you are both right. I agree 100% with Zeynep Oner and I think
Hermione's own words confirm this, they need Harry to teach them not
how to cast spells, but how to fight.
And I agree with Del, they didn't do much high stress defensive work.
But let's remember that they were only in operation for one hour one
day a week for a few months and they were doing it in secret. How much
ground could they cover?
Now, the war is officially on, the Ministry acknowledge that Voldemort
is back, and every single student in that school is going to be keen
on learning how to protect themselves. So the program advances, they
still practice spells, and learn new spells, but a certain amount of
time will be spent on using the spells under stress. In other words,
dueling.
I'm still dying to see what form the DA club will take when school
starts again. I'm guessing the first thing that will happen is that
the DA members will come running over to Harry wanting to know when
the first meeting will be.
Oddly, I could even see (or imagine) Dumbledore surprising Harry by
telling everyone during his opening feast announcements that Harry has
form a Defensive Arts club and any student who wishes to join should
contact to Harry. Typical Dumbledore thing to do.
Just a thought.
