Me (Steven Shaw)
>From the end of Chapter 37 OotP Dumbledore says:
`The thing that smashed was merely the record of the prophecy kept by
the Department of Mysteries. But the prophecy was made to somebody,
and that person has the means of recalling it perfectly'
Dumbledore may have been referring to a magical property of prophecy
that ensures the recipient recalls the prophecy perfectly or he used
the pensieve or some other device to do the recalling. If the
pensieve shows the memory record accurately without the person's bias,
the prophecy is quoted properly for Harry.
Now what concerns me are the ellipses. As my English teacher taught
me, the ellipsis can indicate a pause or omitted information. Could
the prophecy have been delivered after some mystical editor removed
vital information? I don't want to sound maudlin and bring out some
higher power that delivers hints to mortals through prophecy, but that
is the traditional way prophecy works. Prophecy is also delivered so
obscurely that mortals can rarely interpret them properly until the
event has passed. Then everyone says 'Of course it meant that. I
knew it all the time.' This ticks off the rest of the people and they
go lynch the know-it-all. (grin!)
So here is my theory. There is omitted information hidden in those
ellipses which will be revealed in book 6 as Patil sisters go into a
trance and recite the complete prophecy during DA practice. This will
be disbelieved by most as true prophecy, etc. etc.
Steven
who agrees with Zeddicus that prophecy is dangerous.
