Does anyone else have a teenaged son? This kind of behavior - pouting,
jealousy, insecurity, attitude - sounds about par for the course.

However, Ron showed the positive side of his character when he directed the
chess match and sacrificed himself(PS/SS), tried to protect Harry in the
Shrieking Shack (PoA), and is as ready as Harry for an adventure. Now that
Percy has left Hogwarts, and Fred and George will be leaving after Book5,
Ron will have a chance to stand out.

As far as the things that are "rubbish," remember that most of the clothes
came not from second-hand stores, but Ron was the 6th boy in the
hand-me-down chain.
