I agree with you. I read SS in French (Harry Potter a l'Ecole des Sorciers) and
it was amusing, but definitely not as enthralling as pure JKR. In fact, the only
reason is was really entertaining was to see the translations of HP-world
terms into French. Muggle was Moldus, Ravenclaw was Serdaigle, Hogwarts
is Poudlard, and obviously the list goes on.
I think you're right about stricter translations, but it's good to see that the
books are really so good that they can cross the language barrier easily, even
without exceptional translations, and people still love them anyway!
