I'm not sure I understand the process of selecting Head Boy and
Girl. I was under the impression that head boy and girl were chosen
from the prefects. We already knew that James was Head Boy, but in
OOP we learned that Lupin was made prefect in 5th year. Of course,
if they were in different houses, this wouldn't matter, but I've
always pictured MWPP as being in the same house. Am I way off base?

This has been something several people have commented about. I would assume
Head Boy is usually a one year appointment in the student's seventh year so
there is no reason why James couldn't have been a prefect in his sixth year
and Head Boy in his final year. As we know there is one male and one female
prefect in each house in the fifth year so if Remus was the 'good boy' and
got the badge they couldn't have given James, Sirius or Peter badges - not
that I imagine they wanted to, it'd be like making the Twins prefects
*shudder*. I think that the Shack incident helped James (and probably
Sirius) to grow up greatly. He saw his bullying for what it was when Sirius
went too far and stopped (not completely because I imagine Sev deserved it
in some cases as much as James and Sirius deserved to be hit by some Slyth
retaliation in the flashback. His sudden steadying influence (he seems to
have been a leader so if he calmed down it would have an effect on other
students) was deemed a reason to try him out as a prefect in the sixth year
and he was so good at it plus so popular anyway he bacame Head Boy. I think
once they stopped being so nasty the marauders would make great prefects -
the same way a poacher makes the best game keeper.
