And another question - Sirius says he ran away from home when he was
a teen. He obviously rejected his family's attitudes about purity of
blood, etc. Someone removed his name from the tapestry, but, since
he inherited the house, does that mean he was never disowned by his
parents? Or, if he was disowned, does that suddenly not have any
legal standing if the parents die? Any experts on inheritance law
out there?

The problem I have with this is these people know magic. Why was
Sirius forced to stay in the house? I mentioned in another post that
he could have Polyjuiced himself, if for no other reason than to take
a stroll through London. And don't tell me that Polyjuice has been
used too much as a plot device. That's like saying, "Okay, we're
bored with this magic. Give us something new or we won't believe you."
JKR wouldn't have to see it. It could have been a throw away mention
in a conversation.
Remus supposedly lived somewhere. Could Sirius not occasionally have
gone there? He had a wand. Could he not have Apparated to a known
safe place, just for a respite? I mean, these people know magic, do
they not? Do you mean to say that not one of them could think of a
way to give Sirius a break in his stay in this house that is so
dreadfully awful?
This whole idea that he *had* to stay in the house just reeks of a
set-up to provide a convenient way for JKR to play into his reckless
streak to ensure he got killed. It's all too pat for me.
In the past some people on this list have said they found GoF Sirius
unconvincing because he seemed too normal, too healed, too mentally
balanced. Does the portrayal of him here seem more like what the
would expect from someone of his temperment who had spent so much
time in the isolation of prison? If that's so, does that mean he's
true to form here? Or is this also an inconsistent portrayal?
