I thought we got a pretty strong hint; a couple of them. One, during
Occlumency (sp?) lessons, when Snape tells Harry it's not Harry's job to
tell them what the Dark Lord is telling his Death Eaters, Harry says "That's
your job, isn't it?" and Snape says yes. Sounds like he's gone back to
Voldemort, to me.
Also, we have had the conflict between Voldemort-the-lie-detector and Snape
having to fool him resolved. Voldemort is very good at Legilimens. Snape is
a superb Occlumens. So *both* of these are correct; Voldemort can detect
most lies, and Snape is one of the very few that can fool him.
Sounds like we have a really good idea what Snape's task was. Is.
