I think Rebecca has made an excellent point here. V's reign of
terror was going on, and there was probably a significant amount of
animousity towards the Slytherin house at the time. Some people may
have been reacting to the horrible things going on outside of
Hogwarts. Maybe Sirius knew more about Snape than others did & told
James. Maybe Snape is a distant relation to Salazar Slytherin (or
even Voldemort or Grindelwald?) Remember Sirius (or was it James)
said "it's more that he just exists" in the pensieve? Maybe there's
a lot more to that statement than just James & Sirius being
heartless... and I thought this whole Snape thing was going to be
resolved already! I think there might be even more we don't know,
but I could be wrong...
