I think it's just a heartless statement. hasn't the prevailing subtle
(or not so subtle) message in the novels been that it doesn't matter
how far you can trace your bloodlines, but who you are as a person?
Granted, neither Severus or Sirius are innocent, but to target
someone just because he is breathing is horrid. You know, neither
James or Sirius or Remus, either then or during the talk in the
fireplace, ever said "hey, you should have heard/seen said/did
yesterday" nor did they counter "But his slimey slytherin friends
always got us back".
In POA, I was willing to give Sirius the benefit of doubt. Maybe
Severus and his cronies ( because note, Sirius made sure that it
sounded like Severus' gang had more people than the Marauders mere 4)
did have a running rivalry with MWPP. But now that opinion, while
still open, seems less likely. I see Sirius' issue maybe that Severus
is seemingly the embodiment of everything that Sirius has come to
dispise in the WW and since he cannot physically do anything to his
family, he takes it out on the future Potions Master.
Unfortunately, Sirius is one hell of a hypocrite. Remember in GOF
and what he says about watching how a man treats his inferiors ( and
I'll get to Kreacher in another post, it's just that I think he
should have been gotten rid of before the ORDER moved in) as much as
Severus may actually be his equal, Sirius considered Severus to be
his inferior and ensured that he was treated as if he was worthless.
We've seen this in POA when Severus was unconcious and in OotP.
I want to add to the whole slew of Pensieve theories that are out
there. Now, I think that the memories added are the honest to
goodness truth as to what happened. It takes in both the subconcious
and unconcious details, but I also think that the magical environment
has such an effect on the body that everything within a certain
radius of the person is also recorded, though not with the knowledge
of the person. While you have to follow the person who's memories you
are in, you can probably stay within the edge of the radius and see
what's going on around the person. The only thing that is subjective
are the memories that people choose to place in the Pensieve.
