I agree.  I personally don't think that Snape's just posing as a 
nasty bastard to fool or 'train' students (but am I the only person 
who thought his smashing Harry's potion was a little over-the-top, 
even for him?)

But I have a theory, no doubt posed by dozens of members, that some 
of his meanness might be because of the Dark Mark.  Mightn't the 
presence of that terrible, binding Dark Magic have a harshening 
effect on Snape, even during Voldemort's 'wilderness years'?
