I think you're right, I've seen so many "Bad James post" that I
began to wonder if I shall no write a post called in "defence of
James Potter".
Indeed I was also shocked by the marauder treatment of Snape but to
have conclusion like "James is like Draco" or worse seems to be
quite fast.
For one this only an event in seven years against a particular
person (and we know that James and co have problem with him). And
the chain of event is not complete what happened before we don't
know.
Maybe we will learn that James was nice with a lot of people helping
the weak even at slytherin as long they are not named Snapes ;-).
We have more things to learn about James before we can have a
definite judgment about him
As a related note I must said that we know nearly nothing about Lily
so it's possible that some story about her will make us change our
judgement about her. As long as we know nothing she is quite perfect
but it's more an effet of ignorance and I don't buy the theory "all
the good side of Harry come from Lily" I think more thing than the
physical aspect came from James. (and for one thing I don't think
that compassion cames from nature; it's more learned ( a nurture
things) and it the harsh living condition of live with his uncle
that learned Harry compassion(.
And finally as Sarah said some treatment of Draco and company by the
trio is near of the treatment of Snape by James .
So James is not a perfect hero but so is Harry we must wait before
having the final word about him; and the number of fond memory by
several people must show that if he wasn't perfect he was a quite
good person.
