He was being quite reckless, that's right, but several times, JKR 
also reminded us that he was by many ways one of more attractive 
characters in the series. We found several terms 
like   "handsome","good looking", etc, as if she was missing him in 
anticipation. And when at last she made him die, she described his 
body as "a graceful arc", adding a mention to his "waste once-
handsome face". 
That kind of an idealization of the character (though she also 
mentioned he had defects) was yet the way she used to prepare 
Cedric's death in the previous novel: it produces a bigger impresion 
when the death happens, it's more pathetical, it seems even more 
horrible and unfair... I bet that in the next books, the 
descriptions she will give about Harry's looking should follow that 
writing line. As if we didn't worry enough about him after the 
prophecy... But OK, these are the classical rules of the teasing 
game between the author and the readers.
