Please forgive me if someone else has already brought
this up. As Jenny from Ravenclaw so aptly said, with
as many posts as are flying around here, it's darn
near impossible to keep up with them.
My biggest beef with the book is Sirius's death. I
find it spectacularly unsatisfying. Those of you who
know me know that I really love Sirius, but my
dissatisfaction does not only stem from the fact that
I am not happy that JKR chose to kill him off.
Instead, it really stems from the fact that I just
can'treally reconcile myself with the idea that Sirius
is dead. For one, as I recall, the last thing anyone
sees issuing from Bellatrix's wand is red sparks, or
something along those lines. Now, as far as we know,
there is only one killing curse and it is green. So
what did she use on Sirius that killed him? Secondly,
the whole idea of his falling behind the veil is
problematic to me. If there's no body, how can Lupin
be so positive that he's dead? He could have just
been stunned for all anyone knew. I asked my husband
what he thought and he said he thinks Sirius isn't
really dead and I'm beginning to wonder myself. With
Cedric, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he's
gone but I completely lack that conviction when it
comes to Sirius's death.
And I'd also like to add that I think Kreacher was
drugging Sirius and that's why Sirius's behavior was
so erratic. We all know by now that JKR loves to
throw in seemingly unimportant details that really end
up being very important later on. I think this is
definitely the case with Harry just happening to read
about herbs that make someone hotheaded. The second I
read that, I was convinced that Harry would find out
that Kreacher was drugging Sirius. I just cannot
understand why Sirius's behavior took a 180 degree
turn from what it was in book 4, which makes me all
the more convinced that he was being drugged.
One of the other things that bothers me from this book
is the veil itself. How in the world does Luna know
what it is and is she really right about it? Can you
step through it and visit or if you step through it do
you die, and hence why Lupin is convinced that Sirius
is gone? But, again, why would Lupin know about this?
Are these veils common elsewhere? I was under the
impression that since it's housed within the
Department of Mysteries it's probably something with
which no one else is familiar. There just has to be
more to this veil and I really hope we'll learn more
about it in future books.
I find Luna herself an enigma. She seems to know or
at least suspect things that no one else believes in.
I think she is going to prove key to the series from
here on out. There is definitely more to her than
meets the eye, IMHO.
Now onto my Ship theory. I've seen some people
suggest this coupling and I myself am growing rather
fond of it: Neville and Luna. They seem to be very
well suited for each other and so I would like to
propose an acronym for this particular Ship: LOONY
(Luna, Object Of Neville's Yearnings). The maiden
voyage of the good Ship LOONY is about to begin. Make
sure you get your tickets!
~Nicole, who is still depressed about Sirius's death
and thinks she will be for some time yet.

"You haven't got a letter on yours," George observed.
"I suppose she thinks you don't forget your name.
But we're not stupid--we know we're called Gred and Forge."
