SO where does it say in OotP that Snape always attacked MWPP first?
IMO, it seems that Snape only retaliated. I know this is only one
scene, but that's the only scene we got and all Snape does is try to
fight back when MWPP (or rather PP) provoke an attack.
I'd say the reason why James kept on hexing Snape is because Snape
fought back. Not the smartest thing, but looking at Snape's
background, he seems to have decided that that would be the way to
deal with MWPP. Regarding Lily, obviously bully and hexing people
didn;t impress her before, it probably wouldn't have impressed her
while they were dating, so I'd say James was trying to make himself
look as good as possible to his girl. I doubt Snape care who defended
him, as long as he could handle the situation himself and keep his
pride.
