I've long been of the argument that you can't build a friendship like
MWPP have (and learn animagus spells together) without being in the
same house, likely the same bedroom, as Ron, Harry, Neville, Dean and
Seamus are. I mean, James convinced his parents to let Sirius move
in. That implies a level of trust indicative of being in the same
Hogwarts house.

I still feel this way, but I admit I was given pause to find out
that, assuming Snape was in Slytherin, the Dark Arts classes were
Gryff and Slyth shared (and Prof. Flitwick was the teacher! Although,
it is possible that he was just the proctor of the OWL exam and the
regular teacher was somewhere else.)

That seems a bit bold, don't you think? To put Gryff and Slyth in the
Dark Arts classes during the rise of Voldemort, which, make no
mistake, probably tinged everything about Hogwarts.

Seems a bit asking for trouble.

Or...the classes weren't Double DADA with the Slyths and Gryffs. They
were just Gryffs.

Which makes Snape a Gryffindor.

We have no canon proving his house, only the (very good) assumption
that you can't be a head of house without having been a member of
that house.

And consider that there are five beds to a dorm room (assuming it
wasn't a down year for enrollment), who would that make MWPP's
roommate? Snape.

Now, you're thinking, as am I, how could Snape NOT know Lupin was a
werewolf and the others were animagus? Difficult to answer, but here.

If Snape and James really were full of hate for each other, Snape
probably stayed out of the Gryff common room as much as possible. Or,
he suspected, but didn't have proof.

Or, he just wasn't all that smart. We already have reason to question
his alleged mastery of curses and hexes.

OR... going into one of my favorite pet theories. Snape switched
houses. The animosity between him and the others was so great that
the Gryff prefects and Moony, Wormtail, Prongs, Padfoot and Snivellus
themselves all petitioned Dumbledore to allow a resorting.

Most likely, it was the simpler of the explanations (Occam's Razor)
and Gryff and Slyth shared a DADA class (which, after V-Mort
completed his rise to power, D-Dore wisely stopped) Perhaps if Harry
had looked around even further, he'd have seen a young Bellatrix
Lestrange or a young MacNair.

Just figured, as I'm on a roll with throwing out pinata posts for
people to poke, I'd try another one.
